
Chiefs Blow Late Lead, Drop Fifth Straight Game

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs blew a late lead against the Clinton LumberKings Monday night to lose 8-6 at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The lost puts the Chiefs at 16-27 in the second half and 51-61 on the season.
Clinton used a two-out rally to grab the lead in the top of the first. Zach Cates walked Jamal Austin with one out and he stole second base. Kevin Rivers singled on a ground ball to center to score Austin and give the LumberKings the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first the Chiefs used a two-out rally of their own to grab the lead. The first offering from Mayckol Guaipe hit Zeke DeVoss who stole second base. Chadd Krist drew a one-out walk and after a Dustin Geiger pop out, Bijan Rademacher reached on a Jharmidy De Jesus error to load the bases. Tim Saunders doubled down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Chiefs a 3-1 advantage. A throwing error by Patrick Brady on a single by Wes Darvill brought Saunders home to extend the Chiefs' advantage to 4-1.
The two-out scoring continued in the top of the third as Clinton cut the Chiefs' lead in half. Austin singled with one out and Daniel Paolini followed with a single to left field to move Austin to third. Michael Dowd hit an infield single to Saunders to score Austin and cut the Chiefs lead to 4-2.
The LumberKings cut into the Chiefs lead again in the top of the fifth. With one-out Austin singled to right and stole second for the second time of the ballgame. Paolini advanced Austin to third on a ground ball and Krist was unable to handle a pitch from Cates which brought home Austin and Clinton cut the deficit to 4-3.
Peoria extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth against Clinton reliever Kyle Hunter. Darvill doubled down the left field line to start the inning and advanced to third on an Oliver Zapata sacrifice bunt. With the infield drawn in, Sergio Burruel singled home Darvill to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Chiefs.
Justin Berg entered in relief of Pete Levitt in the top of the seventh and Clinton grabbed the lead. Christopher Taylor was hit by Berg and one out later, he stole second base. Paolini drew a walk and another Krist passed ball moved Taylor to third. On a 1-0 offering from Berg, Rivers doubled home Taylor to cut the lead to 5-4. A wild pitch from Berg allowed Paolini to score and tie the game at five. With two-outs, Guillermo Pimentel hit a routine fly ball to center but Pin-Chieh Chen dropped the ball to score Rivers and give Clinton the 6-5 lead.
Clinton used the long ball against Jeffrey Antigua to add insurance runs in the ninth. Paolini launched a homer to left to put the LumberKings up two and Rivers followed with a home run to right and the lead was extended to 8-5.
The Chiefs mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth but were not able to complete the comeback. Krist was hit by a pitch by Stephen Shackleford and both Geiger and Rademacher singled to load the bases. David Colvin entered in relief and struck out Saunders for the second out of the inning. Darvill worked a 10-pitch walk to bring home Krist and make the score 8-6 with the go-ahead run on base. Zapata was unable to keep the rally alive as he grounded out to end the game.
Cates pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Levitt entered in the fifth for Cates and he pitched 1 1/3 innings and he struck out one with the only base runner he allowed was on a hit by pitch. Berg (0-2) went two innings and allowed two hits and one walk for three runs, two earned, with three strike outs. In one inning of work, Antigua allowed two runs, with both of them coming on home runs.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Tim Saunders (SS) - In just his second game with the Chiefs, Saunders led the Chiefs offense when he cleared the bases in the first to give the Chiefs a temporary lead. He had three RBI and a double on the night.
Notes: The hit by pitch for DeVoss ties him for sixth on the Chiefs single-season list...DeVoss now has 30 stolen bases on the year and he is the 21st player in Chiefs history to do so...Krist tied a career-high with two walks...Cates has not won a game in his past 18 starts dating back to August 29, 2011 as a member of the San Diego Padres organization...Berg has allowed a run in all seven of his Chiefs appearances...Berg has blown three saves in three chances...Chiefs relievers have blown 16 saves in 2012...The two homers allowed by Antigua ties him for the all-time Chiefs lead for home runs allowed with 21 (tied with Robert Hernandez)...The Chiefs will wrap up the series Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m...Tuesday means it's Taco Bell Tuesday and fans with a Doritios Locos Tacos receipt can buy one club box seat ticket and get one free for any 2012 regular season Tuesday home game...All fans 55 and older can get tickets for $6...The Chiefs will send RH Starling Peralta (3-7, 3.38) to the mound and the LumberKings will counter with LH Jordan Shipers (4-4, 3.73)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
