Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Nashville, Tenn. - Jay Gibbons homered and Travis Ishikawa provided a game-winning RBI double as the Nashville Sounds (30-44) defeated the Oklahoma City RedHawks (42-31) 2-1 Thursday night before 5,744 at Greer Stadium.
The win marked the first time in 15 games the Sounds won consecutive games over the RedHawks, and it was also the first time since June 9 the RedHawks fell on back-to-back nights.
It was a frustrating night for the RedHawks who went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. They stranded nine on base, with six in scoring position, including one in the final inning.
They scored their only run in the first. With none on and two outs, the RedHawks strung three straight singles together, including an RBI single by Fernando Martinez, who began a rehab assignment with the RedHawks.
The RedHawks had a runner in scoring position with none out in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, but could not score.
The Sounds tied the game in the fourth on a solo homer by Gibbons, his second in as many nights.
The game stayed 1-1 until the sixth when Ishikawa provided an RBI double to put the Sounds in the lead for good.
After Marco Estrada tossed the first five innings, four Sounds relievers held the RedHawks scoreless over the final four frames. Two nights after taking a loss, Amuary Rivas (4-4) earned his fourth win of the season.
RedHawks pitcher Aneury Rodriguez took the loss, despite pitching well under tough circumstances. After starting pitcher Armando Galarraga left after the first inning with an unspecified injury, Rodriguez (2-7) went the next five. He allowed just two hits, but they both scored runs and proved the difference. Rodriguez struck out four and walked two.
The RedHawks will try and earn a split with the Sounds to wrap-up their 11-game road trip Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
