Chiefs Shutout Cougars 2-0 in Series Finale

Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs kept the Kane County Cougars off the board Monday night for a 2-0 win to take the series two games to one. The win moves the Chiefs to 26-32 with 12 games remaining in the first half of the season, nine at home.

Both teams left a runner at third in the first inning before the Chiefs broke through in the top of the third against Brooks Pounders. Pin-Chieh Chen led of with a single and moved to second on an error by right fielder Jorge Bonifacio. Zeke DeVoss singled to right-center and Chen just beat the throw home for a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs were dealt a blow between innings when starting pitcher Ben Wells left with an apparent undisclosed injury while warming up.

Luis Liria entered the game and kept the Cougars off the board for two innings. The Chiefs extended the lead in the top of the sixth. With one out and a runner on first, Javier Baez doubled to the wall in left putting two in scoring position. A diving stop at first base by Murray Watts retired Oliver Zapata but Yasiel Balaguert sped home to put the Chiefs on top 2-0.

Larry Suarez retired the Cougars in order in the sixth and Sheldon McDonald kept the hosts off the board for the next two innings. Yao-Lin Wang came on in the ninth inning and got three straight ground ball outs to preserve the shutout.

Wells allowed one hit over two shutout innings with two strikeouts in his shortest stint of the season. Pressed into early service. Liria (1-0) allowed just a walk over two shutout innings with a strikeout. Suarez threw two perfect innings and McDonald allowed two hits and struck out three over his two shutout frames. Wang earned his fifth save with a perfect ninth.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - The Bullpen - Four Chiefs hurlers combined to allow just two singles over seven shutout innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Kane County also hit into a double play and did not have a runner past first base after the fourth inning. Liria earned the win while Suarez and McDonald got credit for holds and Wang picked up the save.
