MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were unable to keep up with the South Bend Silver Hawks Saturday night at Dow Diamond, falling 5-3 before 4,908 fans in attendance.

The loss drops the Loons one game back from South Bend, who is currently in second place of the Midwest League's Eastern Division standings, the last spot that qualifies for the postseason. The Loons have 21 more games to surpass the S-Hawks before the first half of the season concludes.

Down 5-1, the Loons chipped away at South Bend's lead in the seventh, but two runs were not enough to get the "˜W'. Scoring in the inning was Scott Schebler on an error from center fielder Ender Inciarte, who tossed the ball out of play when trying to catch the Loons left fielder at third. Jesse Bosnik scored on the next at-bat: Jan Vazquez's groundout to short.

Helping to keep Great Lakes in the game defensively was reliever Joel Lima, who entered the game in the top of the sixth with one out and a pair of Hawks in scoring position. The right-handed Domincan induced the S-Hawks into a pair of pop-fly outs to close the frame. Lima remained in to pitch the final 3.2 innings of the game, shutting down South Bend and holding them to one hit. Starter Gustavo Gomez was charged with the loss, his fourth, for five runs in 5.1 innings.

The Silver Hawks scored first on a home run from Gerson Montilla in the first inning for two runs, but cutting into their lead early was Loons first baseman O'Koyea Dickson, who blasted an opposite field home run to pull the team within one.

"O'Koyea's done well [as a Loon]," Great Lakes manager John Shoemaker said after the game. "He's an aggressive hitter and he's got power to all fields. He's hit a couple of home runs to right this year and that's pretty impressive. We like him in the middle of the line-up. He's got a pretty good approach at the plate...he's going to make a pitcher work to get him out."

The homer was Dickson's fifth as a Loon and was his first hit of the night. He finished 2-for-3 with one base on balls, improving his batting average to .391 and hit streak to 10 games.

The Loons play game two of their four-game series with the South Bend Silver Hawks on Sunday. RHP Arismendy Ozoria (3-1, 4.74) will start for the Loons against the Silver Hawks RHP Jesse Darrah (4-2, 3.74). A Sunday Youth Baseball Clinic will precede the 2:05 p.m. game, which will be followed by Kids Run the Bases, both activities presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
