Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Catcher Alex Lavisky smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting the Lake County Captains (25-23) over the Lansing Lugnuts (34-14), 4-3 in four-game series victory at Cooley Law School Stadium in Saturday night.
Lavisky drove in all four of the Captains as part of a 3-for-4 evening. The Lugnuts season-long five-game home winning streak was snapped with the loss.
The Lugnuts had taken the lead in the fifth inning when Andy Burns laced an RBI triple during a 2-for-4 night. Burns was one of five Lugnuts with two hits on Saturday.
Carlos Perez scored twice and went 2-for-4. Chris Hawkins recorded his sixth consecutive multi-hit game, scored a run and added an RBI. K.C. Hobson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Finally, Shane Opitz added two doubles in three at-bats.
The Lugnuts found themselves down early for the second night in a row when Aaron Sanchez allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first frame as part of a three inning, two-hit, two walks and three strike outs.
Justin Nicolino was in line for the win before Brandon Berl (Loss, 2-1) surrendered the Lavisky game-winning home run. Nicolino tossed four scoreless innings while striking out five, walking one and giving up three hits.
The Lugnuts offense touched up Captains starter Cody Anderson for three runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings of work, but the Lugs offense was shutout by the Captains bullpen over 4 1/3 innings. Lake County closer Jeff Johnson stranded the potential game-tying run at second base in the ninth inning en route to his ninth save this year.
Cole Cook (Win, 2-1) allowed just one hit over an inning and a third.
The Lugs continue their seven-game homestand with the Lake County Captains in the second game of a four-game series at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday, May 27th, with a Kids Day. Right-hander Jesse Hernandez (3-2), 2.09) starts for Lansing at 2:05 p.m., opposed by Lake County lefty Shawn Morimando (1-0, 3.32).
Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
