Kernels win 5-4 at Beloit in 12 innings

BELOIT, Wis. - Andy Workman's home run in the 12th inning lifted the Kernels to a 5-4 win over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Friday evening.

The home run was launched to left field with two outs in the inning and was the only run scored in extra frames. It was Workman's 6th of the season.

Ty Kelley (2-0) pitched the 11th and 12 innings for the Kernels, picking up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one.

Clinton Dempster (2-2) allowed the Workman home run and picked up the loss for Beloit. He went three innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two and walking one.

Kaleb Cowart went 4-5 with a walk and a run scored for the Kernels offense. Chevy Clarke drove home three runs, including a 2-run home run. Gary Mitchell and Matt Scioscia both had two hits.

The Snappers scored two runs in the 1st inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Wang-Wei Lin and Nate Roberts drew back to back walks to begin the frame, and they both came home to score. Eddie Rosario's RBI single plated Lin, and Roberts scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field by Jhon Goncalves.

The Kernels tied the game 2-2 in the 2nd inning on Chevy Clarke's 2-run home run. Gary Mitchell reached on an error by Snappers first baseman Drew Leachman to begin the inning. After two groundouts, Clarke's 3rd home run of the season went to left center field.

The Kernels took a 3-2 lead in the 3rd inning when Frazier Hall's RBI double to right center scored Kaleb Cowart.

Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 4-2 in the 6th inning. Gary Mitchell singled to lead off the inning and later came home on Chevy Clarke's RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

Beloit tallied a run in the bottom of the 6th inning when Kyle Knudson's RBI single scored Adam Bryant, cutting the Kernels lead to 4-3.

The Snappers tied the game 4-4 in the 8th inning as Kyle Knudson drove home another run. This time it was a RBI double to right center that scored Drew Leachman.

Austin Wood started for the Kernels and went five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out five and walking six. Aaron Meade pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out four and walking one. Stephen Tromblee pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two and walking two.

Tim Shibuya started for the Snappers and went five innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking two. Ryan O'Rourke pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits. Michael Tonkin pitched two scoreless and hitless innings.

The game included a 32 minute rain delay after the 3rd inning.

The Kernels return home on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. It's Beach Boys Night at the ballpark! Orchestra Iowa will present a pre-game concert at 4:00 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game!
