Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Rainiers posted five runs in the ninth inning and rallied to a 10-9 win over the Tucson Padres at Kino Stadium on Tuesday night, snapping Tacoma's three-game losing skid.
Trailing Tucson 9-5, Luis Rodriguez, Vinnie Catricala and Johan Limonta each hit one-out RBI-singles that put Tacoma within a run. Designated hitter Luis Jimenez scored the tying run on Guillermo Quiroz's ground out, and Catricala scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch thrown by pitcher Brad Brach.
Tacoma saw a pair of one-run leads disappear earlier in the contest, beginning with a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning. Carlos Triunfel scored on Chiang's ground out to put the Rainiers up early, only to have the Padres tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Yasmani Grandal sacrifice fly.
The Rainiers regained the lead in the top of the second thanks to Savastano's RBI-single, but Tucson took back control with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the third.
The score was tied at 5-5 as late as that top of the fourth inning before the Padres notched another run in the bottom of the frame.
Triunfel led a Rainiers lineup that combined to collect 16 hits on Tuesday after going 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Savastano, Rodriguez, Catricala and outfielder Trayvon Robinson each turned in two-hit efforts, with Savastano recording a pair of doubles.
Reliever Shawn Kelley picked up his first win of the season after tossing 2.0 hitless, scoreless innings over the eighth and ninth. Along with contributions from Sean Henn (1.2) and Josh Kinney (1.1), the Rainiers bullpen combined to toss 5.0 shutout frames in the win.
Starter Anthony Vasquez surrendered nine runs on 11 hits and struck out three in his fifth start for Tacoma this season.
The Rainiers (10-15) take the field for the second game of the club's three-game set at Tucson on Wednesday, May 2. Right-hander Jarrett Grube (0-1, 9.64) is slated to start for Tacoma against Padres right-hander Josh Geer (2-3, 7.30). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
