Grasshoppers Knock off Shorebirds 5-3 in Game Two

April 20, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Delmarva Shorebirds

Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers (11-5) held the Delmarva Shorebirds (9-7) scoreless over the final five innings to win game two of the series, 5-3, at NewBridge Bank Park. The Shorebirds left 13 runners on base and went 4-for-20 when hitting with runners in scoring position. John Ruettiger recorded a career high four hits.

The Shorebirds are now two games back of first place in the Northern Division.

The Shorebirds scored the first run in the second inning. Nicky Delmonico led off with a double. Then, Adam Davis doubled off the base of the right-center field wall to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.

Greensboro countered with three runs in the second. Matt Smith hit a double to open the inning. Terrence Dayleg followed with an RBI single. Then, Ryan McIntyre belted a two-run homer over the right-center field wall to give the Grasshoppers a 3-1 lead.

The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the third. John Ruettiger hit a leadoff single. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Connor Narron hit an RBI groundout to second.

In the fourth, the Shorebirds tied the game at 3-3. Mychal Givens hit a one out double and moved to third on an infield single by Tommy Winegardner. Then, Glynn Davis hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Givens.

The Grasshoppers took the lead back in the fifth inning. Tony Caldwell tripled to open the inning. Austin Barnes followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

In the eighth, the Grasshoppers added an insurance run. Rand Smith started the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a groundout and scored on two wild pitches by Matt Taylor.

The Shorebirds went scoreless over the final five innings.

Shorebirds starter Tyler Wilson lasted five innings and gave up six hits and four runs. He struck out four and walked one.

Matt Taylor retired the first six batters he faced before allowing a run in the eighth inning. Taylor struck out three.

The Shorebirds play game three of the series on Saturday night at 7:00pm. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
