Cleveland Monsters News Release
Lake Erie goalie Gerald Coleman was 2.8 seconds away from shutting out San Antonio on Friday, before the Rampage scored their lone goal of the night in the final seconds of the game. In just his sixth game with the team, Coleman set a new Monsters season high with 41 saves as the Lake Erie Monsters (21-22-2-1) topped the San Antonio Rampage (24-20-2-0) 3-1 in Texas on Friday night. Three different Monsters - including newly acquired defenseman Danny Richmond, who was playing in his first game as a Monster - scored goals as Lake Erie began a stretch of four straight road games.
Luke Walker scored the first goal of the game when he received a pass at the side of the net from Evan Brophey at 12:16 of the first period. Brophey won a race to a loose puck that followed a long Joel Chouinard pass, and found Walker for his seventh goal of the season.
After leading 1-0 through one period, the Monsters gained a 2-0 advantage when Greg Mauldin received a Justin Mercier centering pass in front of the goal off the rush. Mauldin wasted no time in firing the puck by Rampage goalie Dov Grumet-Morris for his eighth of the season at 8:21 of the second period. Brad Malone also assisted on the goal.
Richmond scored the final tally for the Monsters at 16:45 of the second period when he fired a slap shot from the high slot on the power play. Tyson Barrie and Mark Olver earned the assists on Richmond's first goal of the season. Richmond joined the Monsters in San Antonio mere hours before Friday's game after being acquired by the franchise from Hershey in exchange for Mike Carman on Thursday.
San Antonio's Michael Caruso broke Coleman's shutout bid when he scored on a top-shelf wrist shot with under three seconds remaining in the game.
Coleman is 4-2-0-0 after stopping 41 of 42 shots in the win on Friday. Grumet-Morris is 13-7-0-0 after turning away 24 of 27 Monsters shots in the Rampage loss.
The Monsters continue their road swing Saturday night in Houston. The puck drops at 8:35 PM Eastern, and all the action can be heard live on AM 1220 WHKW.
