San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage were defeated 3-1 by the Lake Erie Monsters on Pink in the Rink Night Friday evening at the AT&T Center. A franchise record crowd 16,151 fans witnessed the Rampage skate on pink ice in support of breast cancer awareness.
Monsters right wing Luke Walker put Lake Erie ahead 1-0 at the 12:16 mark of the first period. Center Evan Brophey fed Walker from behind the net and Walker fired a shot that beat Rampage backstop Dov Grumet-Morris to his right. Defenseman Joel Chouinard also assisted on Walker's seventh goal of the season.
Lake Erie took a 2-0 advantage 8:21 into the second period on left wing Greg Mauldin's eighth goal of the year. His one-timer from the slot beat Grumet-Morris glove-side to double the Monsters lead. Forwards Justin Mercier and Brad Malone notched the assists on the play.
Defenseman Danny Richmond struck for a power-play goal with 3:15 remaining in the middle frame to make the count 3-0 in favor of the Monsters. Richmond stepped into a feed from defenseman Tyson Barrie and ripped a shot that beat Grumet-Morris through the netminder's legs for his first goal of the 2011-12 season. The alternate helper on the Richmond goal went to center Mark Olver.
Rampage defenseman Michael Caruso scored the lone San Antonio goal with three seconds remaining in the third period. He stepped out in front of the net and wristed a shot by the right shoulder of Lake Erie goaltender Gerald Coleman for his second score of the year. Forwards Mark Cullen and Jon Matsumoto registered the assists on Caruso's marker.
Coleman turned aside 41 of the 42 Rampage shots he saw to post his fourth win of the season. Grumet-Morris made 24 stops on 27 Monsters attempts in the San Antonio loss.
After the game, the Rampage raised a franchise record $48,000 in a postgame jersey auction to benefit the San Antonio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Rampage team captain Nolan Yonkman's jersey also went for a franchise record $6,000. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich's pink hockey tie signed by Tony Parker, Time Duncan and Manu Ginobili brought in $2,600.
The Rampage (24-20-2-0) embark on their annual Rodeo road trip this week. Their first stop is in Hamilton on Tuesday to play a 9 a.m. (CST) contest against the Bulldogs.
