Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (29-12-2-1) won their third straight with a 4-0 victory in Seattle Saturday over the Thunderbirds (16-23-0-1).
Portland goaltender Mac Carruth stopped all 25 Seattle shots for his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. His previous shutout this season was also against Seattle on New Year's Eve, when he made 18 saves in a 2-0 win.
After a scoreless first period, Portland jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period when Ty Rattie and Oliver Gabriel scored 41 seconds apart. Rattie's goal came on a power play, and was his league-leading 39th of the season.
The Hawks added one more later in the period when Marcel Noebels scored at the 12:32 mark to take a 3-0 lead. It was his first point as a Winterhawk, and came against his former team. Portland acquired Noebels Tuesday prior to the trade deadline from Seattle in exchange for Seth Swenson and two first round draft picks.
Portland rounded out the scoring with a goal from Troy Rutkowski at the 18:21 mark of the third period to finish with a 4-0 win. Joe Morrow picked up an assist on Rutkowski's goal, extending his scoring streak to six games, a span in which he has 10 points.
The Hawks held a significant advantage in shots on goal with 52 shots to Seattle's 25.
Portland was 1-8 on the power play and a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks are back in action Monday going for their team record 17th straight home win when they host the division-leading Tri-City Americans at the Rose Garden in a special 3 p.m. matinee on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
