Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out a 3-game Western Hockey League home stand Saturday night with a 4-3 Overtime Shootout loss to the visiting Victoria Royals.
The loss extended Brandon's losing streak to three games and over the course of the last two weeks, the Wheat Kings have lost six of seven (1-5-0-1).
Shootout goals by Ryan Soudek and Ben Walker proved to be the difference as the Royals battled back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to force overtime.
Jeff Crooks, Brandon Magee and former Wheat King left-winger Dakota Conroy scored goals in regulation time for the winners while Brandon got goals off the sticks of Dominick Favreau, Michael Ferland and captain Mark Stone - with his 30th of the season.
Conroy and veteran defenceman Jordan Fransoo were dealt to the Royals earlier this week in exchange for all star center Kevin Sundher. A third round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres, Sundher picked up two assists - his first points as a Wheat King - in a losing cause. The Surrey, B.C. product is the Royals (Chilliwack Bruins) franchise scoring leader.
Saturday's loss also spoiled an excellent home debut for rookie netminder Curtis Honey. Honey turned aside 46 of 49 shots, including one of three in the Shootout. Former Portland Winter Hawk Keith Hamilton stopped 39 shots for the win.
The Wheat Kings will try to improve on their 22-19-1-3 record on Sunday night when they take on the Warriors in Moose Jaw. Sunday's game will be the first of three straight on the road for the Wheat Kings, who will return home to face the defending Champion Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
