Garrison, Maxwell Clamp Down Late
June 17, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania- Seth Garrison and Blake Maxwell combined to allow just one run over the last five and one third innings as the Portland Sea Dogs beat the Akron Aeros 4-3 Friday night. Garrison (1-2) earned the win by going three and one-third innings, allowing just two hits and a run. Maxwell worked two scoreless innings to pick up his sixth save of the year. Austin Adams (5-6) pitched seven innings for Akron and allowed all four Portland runs.
Chih-Hsien Chiang led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jorge Padron knocked in the game-winning run with an RBI double with two outs off Adams in the top of the sixth inning. It's the second game-winning RBI Padron has had on the road trip, getting the big hit on Tuesday night in Erie as well. Meanwhile, Chiang continues to be one of the hottest hitters in the Eastern League. The outfielder has picked up a hit in 15 of his last 16 games.
Both sides missed out on opportunities to score at various points of the game. After his RBI single in the first, Chiang got caught in a rundown between first and second. That brought in Tony Thomas for the second Sea Dogs run, but the Aeros managed to get Chiang out, leaving no one on base. Akron's baserunning problems were even more frequent.
Beau Mills ran into an out after one out single in the first inning. Former Sea Dog Juan Apodaca was hit with a line drive from Jason Donald while leading off from third base with two outs in the second inning. Because Apodaca was in fair territory when he was hit, he became the third out of the inning, baling Chris Balcom-Miller out a jam. Nick Weglarz was thrown out at third base attempting to go from first to third on what was a game-tying single from Jordan Henry in the fifth inning. Those mistakes all helped Portland to get out of potential problem situations.
Garrison and Maxwell didn't need much help down the stretch. Garrison retired his last six batters faced. The duo combined three perfect innings until Kyle Bellows reached on an error, leading off the ninth inning against Maxwell. The North Carolina native recovered with a couple of fielder's choice groundouts and a strikeout of Juan Diaz to end the game.
The Sea Dogs take on the Aeros tomorrow night in the second of the three-game series between the two teams. Portland returns to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder starting Tuesday, June 21st. That night will be Jimmy Buffett night. Tomorrow, the Sea Dogs will have their 4th annual Father's Day 5K Road Race, starting at 9:15 AM. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
