Squirrels Scamper Past Baysox

RICHMOND, Va. - The Bowie Baysox fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-4 Friday night in Richmond. It was the 16th meeting between the teams this season, and the sixth time the Squirrels came out on top. With the loss, the Baysox are now 34-33 on the season, and fall to third place in the Western Division, 4.0 games behind the Harrisburg Senators.

Richmond took a large early lead with a four-run first inning. Juan Perez led off with a double to left field and scored when Roger Kieschnick lifted a one out triple to center field. Wes Hodges drove in the second run with a two-out RBI single to center field and moved to second when Justin Christian singled to left field. Johnny Monell lined an RBI single to center field to plate the third run and put runners on the corners. With Aaron Lowenstein batting, Monell attempted to steal second base. He was caught in a rundown and eventually tagged out, but not until after Christian scored from third and put Richmond up 4-0.

Offensively, the Baysox struggled against Squirrels right-hander Daryl Maday. After failing to score when loading the bases with one out in the top of the first inning against Maday, 10 straight Baysox batters were retired in a row before shortstop Pedro Florimon singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Florimon advanced to third base on a single by left fielder Buck Britton and scored Bowie's first run on a wild pitch with third baseman Billy Rowell batting. Rowell singled to left field and Ronnie Welty tied the game at 4-4 with a three run home run to left field. It was his ninth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead Brandon Waring.

After the rough first inning, Baysox starter Chorye Spoone retired 12 out of the next 13 batters he faced before running into trouble again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Dominguez hit a one-out double to left field and Hodges flew out for the second out of the inning. Christian reached on an infield single to second base, and Greg Miclat threw the ball away, allowing Dominguez to scamper home and break the tie. Christian stole second base and Monell drew a walk before Lowenstein lined an RBI single to right field, plating Christian and putting Richmond up 6-4. Monell advanced to third base on the single and Lowenstein moved to second on the throw home, and the Baysox brought left-hander Nick Bierbrodt on in relief of Spoone. Nick Noonan grounded out to end the inning.

The Baysox tried to mount a rally in the top of the ninth inning, but could not come up with a run. Florimon and Britton grounded out to open the inning, before pinch hitter LJ Hoes lined a single to center field. Welty drew a walk to put the tying run on base, but center fielder Xavier Avery struck out looking to end the contest.

Spoone was charged with the losing after allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and a walk over five and two thirds innings. With the loss, Spoone is 1-4 for Bowie this season. Bierbrodt finished the game with two and one third scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit, no walks and striking out one batter.

The Baysox are on the road for a six game road trip. They return home Friday, June 24, for a three game home stand against the Binghamton Mets. The home stand features Louie's Birthday Bash, Scout Night Camp Out, and postgame fireworks Friday night, Star Wars Saturday with postgame fireworks Saturday night, and the Baysox post-Fathers Day Celebration with pregame catch on the field and a meet the team autograph session before Sunday afternoon's game.
