
Fisher Cats Win Series Opener 5-4

The SeaWolves dropped the series opener to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in front of a sellout crowd of 5,232 at Jerry Uht Park.
The SeaWolves jumped ahead against New Hampshire starter Robert Ray in the bottom of the first inning. Jamie Johnson led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. Brandon Douglas singled putting runners on the corners. Douglas stole second and on a throwing error by the catcher Travis d'Ardaud, Johnson scored for a 1-0 lead. Ray retired the next two but served up a two-run home run to Michael Bertram for a 3-0 Erie edge. The home run for Bertram was his fourth of the season.
In the fourth, the Fisher Cats made it a one-run game against Erie starter Jay Voss. Mike McDade reached on a fielder's choice and Danny Perales homered to make it a 3-2 game in favor of Erie.
In the sixth, Perales walked with one out and scored on a two-out Ricardo Nanita triple, tying the game at 3-3.
New Hampshire took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth against reliever Robbie Weinhardt. McDade doubled with one out and Moises Sierra reached on a two-out infield single putting runners on the corners for Nanita. A wild pitch scored McDade for a 4-3 Fisher Cats edge. Nanita singled home Sierra for a 5-3 New Hampshire lead.
The âWolves made the game close in the ninth inning but failed in a comeback attempt. Michael Rockett led off the inning and slammed an opposite-field home run, his first, off of reliever Robert Korecky making it a one-run game at 5-4. The âWolves would get no closer as Korecky retired the side following the home run, preserving the New Hampshire win, picking up his third save.
Weinhardt (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on three hits in an inning of work.
Voss got the no-decision allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings.
The SeaWolves and Fisher Cats continue a three-game series on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park...7:05 First Pitch. RHP Mark Sorensen (6-3, 4.85 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Chad Beck (5-2, 4.08 ERA).
