TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in the opener of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels jumped out to an 11-4 advantage and held on for an 11-9 series-clinching win over the Binghamton Mets on Thursday night in front of 7,990 fans at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in the series finale for the Flying Squirrels...Making his 12th start of the season...Received a no-decision in his last outing 6/11 at New Hampshire...Allowed four hits over five scoreless innings...Struck out eight batters and walked one...Was the second shutout he has combined on this season (5/9 at Bowie)...Eight strikeouts were a season-high...Picked off Moises Sierra at first base in the bottom of the second inning, the fourth baserunner he has picked off this season...Retired the leadoff batter in four of his five innings on the mound...Recorded five groundouts and no flyouts/popouts...Threw 83 pitches, 49 strikes...Threw 19 pitches or more in three of his five innings on the mound...Threw first-pitch strikes to 11 of the 19 batters he faced...Activated from the Disabled List 5/9...Was placed on the DL 5/2 due to pneumonia... #WINNING: The Flying Squirrels will attempt to match their high-water mark of the season at two games over .500 with a win tonight against Bowie...The only time the club was two-games over the .500 was 4/12 when Richmond was 4-2...The team currently owns a winning record for the first time since 4/15 (5-4)...The Flying Squirrels have won four consecutive series for the first time in the two-year history of the franchise.
FALSE STARTS: Richmond has lost each of its last seven series-openers...The club has won the next game six out of those seven times and has gone on to win five of the seven series including each of the last four...The Flying Squirrels last win in a series-opener was 5/20 at Reading...The team is 9-11 in series-openers this season.
GETTING OFFENSIVE: The Flying Squirrels matched a season-high with 11 runs scored in last night's 11-9 win over Binghamton...The club also scored 11 runs in an 11-4 win over the Harrisburg Senators 5/15, the only other time the team reached double-digits in runs...It was the 25th time in 65 games that the club has scored five runs or more...Richmond improved to 22-3 when scoring five runs or more this season...The 20 combined runs scored between the Flying Squirrels and B-Mets was the most this season and second most in a home game during the two-year history of the franchise...Richmond and Reading combined for 22 runs in a 15-7, 11-inning win for the R-Phils on 7/28...The 17 hits allowed by the Flying Squirrels last night were also a season-high.
THE JOLLY ROGER: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick is batting .323 (42-for-130) over his last 34 games with six doubles, two triples, six home runs, 24 RBIs and 19 runs scored...The 24-year-old has 16 multi-hit games over that span which also includes a season-long eight-game hit streak...He has raised his batting average from .173 to .256 since 5/7...His five RBIs Thursday night were a season-high for a Richmond batter...Kieschnick has also homered in back-to-back games after hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning last night...Charlie Culberson is the only Flying Squirrel batter to ever homer in three straight games (6/8-6/10).
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 2.95 ERA through 65 games, the only staff with a sub-three ERA...Richmond's 2.95 staff ERA is the second lowest in all of MiLB, trailing only the Low-A Burlington Bees (2.94)...The pitching staff has logged a league-high 595 1/3 innings of work and has allowed a league-low 230 runs.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Flying Squirrels have begun a stretch where they will play 20 out of 27 games at home...The club is 21-12 at home and is batting .251 (284-for-1,130) in 33 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.39 runs per game at home (145R/33G)...Overall, the club is 12-20 on the road, and is batting .201 (215-for-1,069) and averaging 3.22 runs per game (103R/32G) in 32 road contests.
