Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - It was long overdue, but Brandon Workman - the Red Sox second round pick a year ago - finally picked up his first professional victory on Sunday night. In his 10th start of the season, the University of Texas product allowed just one run over six innings, while striking out a career-best seven batters, as the Drive (25-25) defeated the Asheville Tourists (22-28), 4-1.
Workman, a six-foot-five right-hander, allowed base hits in each of the first two innings but retired 10 straight Tourists at one point until Rafael Ortega led off the top of the sixth with a triple. Asheville would snap Workman's scoreless inning streak at 15.2 innings pitched - the longest by a Greenville hurler in 2011 - on Chandler Laurent's RBI-single, but it would be the only offense the Tourists could muster.
By the time the visitors were able to get on the scoreboard, the Drive had already staked their starting pitcher a four-run lead. A different group of offensive leaders emerged as Greenville's Josue Peley, Heiker Meneses, and Lucas Leblanc - the 7-8-9 hitters - all recorded two hits apiece, and knocked in three of the team's four runs.
With two outs and no runners aboard in the bottom of the second, four consecutive batters reached base for the Drive, including three hits. Meneses' two-run triple off Albert Campos (2-4) broke a scoreless tie, and LeBlanc added an RBI-single.
Two innings later Greenville tacked on their final run on Felix Sanchez's RBI-single. In similar fashion to the second, the first two batters were retired before the next three batters singled, including Sanchez's knock. It was the fourth time in five contests that the 20-year-old outfielder recorded a multi-hit game.
The duo of Charle Rosario and Jordan Flasher ensured that the bullpen wouldn't deny Workman his first win again, as they combined for three scoreless innings. Flasher struckout two, and induced Ortega into a game-ending groundout to pick-up his first save of the season.
The Drive and Tourists continue their three-game series on Memorial Day from Fluor Field. Right-hander Kyle Stroup (1-5, 7.05 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Asheville counters with right-hander Josh Slaats (1-3, 8.74 ERA).
Tomorrow's first pitch is set for a special time of 6 PM at the ballpark, following the Greenville Hospital System USA Pro Cycling Championship, which takes place in Downtown Greenville.
