Charleston RiverDogs News Release

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Charleston offense exploded for a season-high 17 runs and eleven extra-base hits, and equaled watermarks with four home runs and nineteen total hits, as the RiverDogs thrashed the Greenville Drive, 17-7, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of a crowd of 6,412 fans at Fluor Field.

Charleston claimed a season-high four-game winning streak to improve to 16-20, while Greenville dropped its second straight to drop to 17-19.

Kramer Sneed (2-4) made a seamless transition from the starting rotation to the bullpen, authoring 5.0 scoreless innings to garner the victory. The Barton College left-hander kept the Drive offense completely under wraps, permitting just three hits and walking none while fanning five.

Charleston forged a two-out rally to nab a 2-0 first inning lead for the second straight night.

J.R. Murphy responded from a 0-5 night in the series opener to give the RiverDogs a 1-0 advantage against Drive starter Manuel Rivera. After drilling several pitches foul, Murphy powered his fifth home run of the season to clear the Green Monster in left-centerfield.

Rob Segedin stepped to the plate next and laced a single to right-centerfield, setting the table for Gary Sanchez. The 18-year old catcher picked up his third RBI in as many at-bats, ripping a groundball double into the left field corner to chase home Segedin from first.

Greenville tallied a two-spot its own in the last of the frame to even the score versus Charleston starter Shane Greene.

Brandon Jacobs and Lucas LeBlanc stroked back-to-back two-out RBI singles to plate Drew Hedman and Miles Head.

Drew Dominguez and Leonel Escobar helped put the Drive in front in the bottom of the second, singling to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Heiker Meneses produced the 3-2 lead with a RBI groundout to shortstop.

A two-out rally was the story again in the top of the third, as the RiverDogs continued to flex their long ball muscle.

Ramon Flores roped the first of the inning, tagging a Rivera fastball beyond the right field fence. Kelvin De Leon followed, and launched his team-leading sixth homer of the year off the Met Life building behind the left field wall, staking Charleston to a 4-3 lead. The margin swelled to 5-3 shortly after, as Rivera yielded back-to-back doubles to Kyle Roller and Anderson Feliz.

The see-saw affair continued in the bottom of the inning, as the Drive gained a 6-5 advantage to end Greene's night.

LeBlanc followed up his first inning RBI single with a run-scoring double to cut the deficit to 5-4. Greene could not stop the bleeding against Jose Garcia, who pounded a two-run shot over the Monster in left for his third home run of the campaign.

Greene matched a season-low in lasting only three innings while allowing the six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks, managing to strike out three along the way.

Rivera, who had pitched to a 1.80 ERA in two prior starts versus the RiverDogs, slogged through his outing as well. The 21-year old southpaw permitted a season-high 10 hits in surrendering the five runs over 4.0 frames, sprinkling in a strikeout and two walks.

Jordan Flasher (2-2) cooled off the Charleston offense with a 1-2-3 fifth, but could not hold down the powerful lineup in the sixth as the RiverDogs retook the lead with their second three-run inning of the contest.

Feliz smoked a leadoff double to right, and came in cross the plate with the tying run when Jose Mojica reached on an error. Flores worked his typical tough at-bat four batters later, punching a single to right to send Mojica and Segedin scurrying home for an 8-6 Charleston lead.

Roller greeted Greenville reliever Tyler Lockwood with his second double of the game to help lead to an insurance run in the seventh. Feliz struck out, but Eduardo Sosa picked him up, lofting an opposite field RBI double to extend the Charleston advantage to 9-6.

Any thought of a Greenville comeback was put to rest in the top of the ninth, as Charleston poured on eight runs to take a commanding 17-6 lead.

Mojica saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end, but contributed to the offensive outburst with a sacrifice fly off Garret Rau for a 10-6 cushion. Rau lost the strike zone and gave the RiverDogs bullpen extra rope, walking Sanchez and Flores to force in two more runs. When Rau did get the ball in the zone, De Leon roped a line drive between third and short to plate two more tallies for a 14-6 lead.

Drive manager Billy McMillon plucked Drew Dominguez from second base to replace Rau on the mound, but Charleston was still not done wreaking havoc. Roller spanked his fifth home run of the season to dead-centerfield. The three-run jack marked the fourth consecutive game that the East Carolina alum has gone yard.

David Renfroe cranked his second home run of the year off the RiverDogs Nathan Forer in the bottom of the ninth, providing the final ten-run margin.

Roller and Sosa cracked four base knocks apiece to spearhead the charge for Charleston, who also received three hits from Murphy, and two hits from three others. Flores drove in a season-high four runs, while Roller and De Leon notched three each. All nine starters plated at least one run, and eight of the nine placed themselves in the hit column.

The RiverDogs and Drive hook up for a Sunday matinee in the third of a four-game set, tomorrow at 4:05 pm. Left-hander Nik Turley (1-3, 3.52 ERA) is slated to take the mound for Charleston, versus right-hander Kyle Stroup (1-3, 7.90 ERA) of Greenville.
