Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws dropped a 1-run ball game for the 2nd consecutive day as they fell 1-0 to the Hagerstown Suns in a pitchers duel on Saturday. Bryce Harper hit a Line Drive solo HR to Left Field on the first pitch in the 7th inning for the only run of the game. The game was delayed 21 minutes at the start due to rain, but once it began it was an exciting, well played baseball game. BlueClaws SP Garett Claypool pitched a gem of a game, the BlueClaws were just unable to push across any runs in support of their Starter.
Making his 5th start of the year, Claypool pitched 7 innings, allowed only 4 hits, 1 run, walked none, and struck out 7. The BlueClaws bats were silent as they amassed just 4 hits in the game. Suns SP Robbie Ray was magnificent in just his 2nd start of the year throwing 6 innings of shutout ball giving up just 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 7. No BlueClaw had more than 1 hit in the game, and Lakewood combined for 9 strikeouts as a team. Anthony Hewitt had a rough day at the plate going 0-4 with 4 strikeouts.
Hagerstown OF Bryce Harper extended his hitting streak to 18 games after he hit a HR and a single. BlueClaws SP Garett Claypool struck out Harper in each of his first 2 at-bats of the game. Then on the first pitch of the 7th inning, Harper showed exactly why he was the #1 pick of the MLB Amateur Draft last June as he smacked a fastball over the Left Field fence on a line drive for his 9th Home Run of the season and score the only run of the game for either team. Harper singled later to finish the game 2-4.
Sunday the BlueClaws will send LHP Ervis Manzanillo (1-2, 6.08 ERA) to the mound looking for his first win as a BlueClaw. Hagerstown will counter with LHP Bobby Hansen who comes in at 4-1 with a 4.08 ERA. First Pitch Sunday is scheduled for 1:05 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
