Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD-The Hagerstown Suns (24-12) nipped the Lakewood BlueClaws (16-19) by a score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park for their seventh shutout win of the 2011 campaign. Washington Nationals 12th round selection in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, LHP Robbie Ray (1-0), the winning pitcher, recorded his first Minor League triumph after tossing six scoreless innings, while giving up just two base hits, striking out seven and walking one. Ray used all three of his pitches, a fastball with late life, a plus changeup, and a darting slurve to baffle the BlueClaws.
Lakewood RHP Garett Claypool (0-2), the losing pitcher, engaged in a pitcher's duel with Ray, going 7.0 innings and surrendering one earned run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Neither Claypool, nor Ray gave up a single run through the first six frames, before RF Bryce Harper, the number one draft pick from the 2010 MLB Draft, lined a solo home run the other way over the left field wall to give the Suns a 1-0 advantage.
The BlueClaws would try to claw their way back in it, threatening in the 8th and 9th innings. Suns RHP Shane McCatty allowed back-to-back singles to CF Aaron Altherr and SS Edgar Duran, giving way to LHP Chris Manno (5 SV), who induced a popout off the bat of 2B Carlos Perdomo to end the inning.
In the 9th stanza, Lakewood got the tying run into scoring position, much like in the series opening contest, with two walks issued to LF Miguel Alvarez and 1B Jim Murphy. RF Anthony Hewitt, who walked into the batter's box with three consecutive strikeouts on the afternoon, would be sent down on strikes swinging on a Manno breaking ball. Then, 3B Stephen Batts flew out to Harper in right field to seal the deal for the Hagerstown Suns and give the visiting club a two-nothing lead in the four game road series.
The Suns and BlueClaws will continue their second series meeting of the season with a 1:05pm first pitch on Sunday. For the BlueClaws it will be LHP Ervis Manzanillo (1-2, 6.08) dealing against Hagerstown LHP Bobby Hansen (4-1, 4.08). The Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pregame show in MiLB.com will get underway at 12:50pm on the Hagerstown Suns Baseball Network.
