Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC ‚¬" The Drive closed out their first homestand of the season by blanking their cross-state nemesis, the Charleston RiverDogs 3-0. It Greenville ‚¬â„¢s third shutout in the early going of the 2011 season, improving them to 6-2 as they gear up for a nine-game road trip beginning tomorrow in Savannah, GA.

While starting pitcher Anthony Ranaudo didn ‚¬â„¢t allow a run in his second straight professional outing, he was unable to go the minimum five innings to earn the victory due to a high pitch count. The tall right-hander from LSU allowed a pair of hits, walked three, hit a batter, and struckout five in 4.0 innings.

The duo of Garrett Rau (1-0) and Tyler Lockwood preserved the blanking of the RiverDogs (3-5), allowing just a hit over the final five innings. Rau picked up the victory, striking out four in 2.2 innings as Lockwood slammed the door shut with a perfect final 2.1 innings to earn his first save.

Only four hits were needed by the Drive ‚¬â„¢s offense to secure the victory, as they were able to take advantage of three Charleston defensive miscues. A game that featured the South Atlantic League ‚¬â„¢s two most potent offenses thus far, neither made a peep until Greenville got on the board in the fourth.

Christian Vazquez led off with a single and eventually came around to score on Drew Hedman ‚¬â„¢s two-out, RBI-single. Bryce Brentz, who followed Vazquez with a walk, also scored on the play due to an error by RiverDogs ‚¬â„¢ right-fielder Kelvin De Leon.

An inning later, Greenville plated another unearned run as Sean Coyle drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a throwing error by Charleston starting pitcher Mikey O ‚¬â„¢Brien (0-1). The diminutive second baseman came around to score on Brentz ‚¬â„¢s two-out single.

The Drive now hit the road for their first road trip of the season, beginning with a four-game set at Historic Grayson Stadium versus the Savannah Sand Gnats. Right-hander Brandon Workman (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes to the mound for Greenville in the opening game.

Following the nine-game road trip that includes a rematch with the RiverDogs in Charleston, and an off day, the Drive return home to Greenville on Monday, April 25th.

However, Fluor Field will play host to a college game tomorrow evening, featuring two HBCU programs, Claflin University and Voorhees College. First pitch is set for 7 PM.
