Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL -The Peoria Chiefs have their backs against the wall after Cubs right-hander Carlos Silva took the loss in a 7-0 set back to the Wild Card leading Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 31-32 on the half and 69-63 on the season, three and a half games behind the Cougars with five to play. Kane County can eliminate the Chiefs with a win on Thursday or Friday against Peoria.
The Chiefs quickly put two runners on base in the first inning against Murphy Smith but were unable to score. Hak-Ju Lee singled up the middle and Logan Watkins followed with a bunt single to put two on with no outs. But Smith struck out Jae-Hoon Ha and Justin Bour bounced into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The game was scoreless into the fourth before the Cougars scored against rehabbing Cubs right-hander Carlos Silva. With two outs Mitch Levier drew a walk and Rashun Dixon singled to right. Jason Christian broke the scoreless tie with a three-run homer into the right-field party deck.
Another two-out run built the Cougars lead and ended Silva's night in the fifth. Jose Crisotomo led off the inning with a double before Silva recorded consecutive outs. Anthony Aliotti singled to right for a 4-0 Cougars lead before Robinson Lopez relieved Silva. Leonardo Gil singled off Lopez and Levier drove home Aliotti for a 5-0 lead. A single by Dixon made it 6-0 before Lopez escaped the inning.
Smith pitched around a leadoff two-base error in the sixth and stranded two Chiefs in the seventh. Kane County pushed across the final run in the seventh off Lopez as Crisotomo singled home Dixon who had doubled.
Silva allowed five runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out four. The Cubs right-hander threw 78 pitches, 52 for strikes and allowed a homer.
