South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks overcame two deficits in Tuesday night's game against the Lake County Captains, but couldn't do it again late. The Captains scored once in the top of the ninth and held on to win 4-3, splitting the series with South Bend.

With the game tied 3-3 in the ninth, Bobby Borchering's high throw to first glanced off Ramon Castillo's mitt, allowing Delvi Cid to advance to second with two outs. Casey Frawley then crushed a triple off Chris Odegaard (LP, 5-1) just over the head of Keon Broxton in center to score Cid and put Lake County up 4-3. Frawley was thrown out attempting to make the triple an inside-the-park homer, but the damage was done as the Captains were up for good.

Preston Guilmet (WP, 3-1) surrendered a run in the eighth on Ender Inciarte's RBI double, but shut the door on South Bend in the ninth to earn the victory. The Silver Hawks had their best hitters coming up in the ninth, but David Nick and Borchering struck out before Matt Davidson flew out to end the game.

South Bend didn't have a base runner reach against Lake County starter Giovanni Soto (ND) until the fifth inning. With the Silver Hawks trailing 2-0 and one out, Castillo took a delivery from Soto over the wall in left to cut the deficit in half. The bomb was Castillo's seventh of the season and only the third that Soto had surrendered all year.

Castillo provided the dramatics again in the seventh. Nick singled and Borchering walked to start the inning before Davidson grounded in to a double play. Nick advanced to third on the play, however, and scored to tie the game when Castillo lofted a 0-2 pitch to right.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the eighth, Odegaard loaded the bases with one away by allowing a hit, issuing a walk, and hitting a batter. Catcher Roberto Perez then grounded out to give Lake County a 3-2 lead before South Bend responded with Inciarte's RBI double in the bottom half.

Lake County struck first against South Bend starter Diogenes Rosario (ND). Rosario walked Kyle Smith to lead off the inning before Chris Kersten homered off the message board in left field to put the Captains up 2-0. Rosario settled down from there, throwing 5.0 innings of two-run ball while walking three and striking out five.

Brad Gemberling (ND) relieved Rosario with one of his best appearances out of the pen this season. He struck out the first four batters he faced before eventually loading the bases in the seventh. However, Gemberling got Cid to ground in to a fielder's choice to end the threat.

The Silver Hawks welcome the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) to Coveleski Stadium for a three-game series beginning Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. South Bend will throw LHP Mike Belfiore (1-9, 4.52 ERA), while Great Lakes sends RHP Matt Magill (6-2, 3.36 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
