Suns Take Wednesday Matinee, 7-5

Jacksonville, Fla. - Ozzie Martinez knocked in three runs, for a total of seven in the first three games of the series, leading the Jacksonville Suns (63-46, 23-16) to a 7-5 win over the Birmingham Barons (37-72, 13-26) in front of 3,964 Wednesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns reliever Brad Stone (2-1) picked up the winning decision, giving up two runs and two hits over two frames. Barons starter Kyle McCulloch (1-1) fell in the losing decision after allowing six runs, four earned, with seven hits over seven innings. Jose Ceda (2) saved the game by recording the final two outs of the game.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the third inning against McCulloch. With runners at first and third and one out, Ozzie Martinez executed a safety squeeze, scoring Ryan Curry from third base for a 1-0 lead. Vinny Rottino next singled in Lorenzo Scott for a 2-0 Suns lead.

The Barons cut into the Suns lead in the fifth inning against Stone, as John Shelby scored on a Jim Gallagher groundout for a 2-1 score.

The Suns put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning. With two on and one out, Ozzie Martinez ripped a double to bring home Jeff Corsaletti and Scott for a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning, Lee Mitchell belted a two-out, two-run triple to right-centerfield for a 6-1 score.

Birmingham added a second run in the sixth inning when a C.J. Retherford sacrifice fly brought in Salvador Sanchez for a 6-2 game.

Matt Dominguez led off the Suns eighth inning with his 11th home run of the season, extending the Suns lead to 7-2.

Barons shortstop Eduardo Escobar hit a one-out, three-run home run in the ninth inning off reliever Wade Korpi, shaving the Jacksonville lead to 7-5.
