Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, Miss. - For the second time in three contests at Trustmark Park, the BayBears couldn't muster up a run as they fell to the Mississippi Braves, 4-0, on Wednesday night while dropping out of first place in the South Division.
Now down by a ½ game to the Jacksonville Suns, the BayBears (58-48, 22-16) received another solid start from reigning Southern League Pitcher of the Week Kyler Newby as he matched last week's numbers with five scoreless innings and seven strikeouts.
Mississippi (48-59, 18-21) waited until Newby left the contest to break a 0-0 tie as Yasser Gomez reached on an error to start the bottom of the sixth. After a sac bunt from Tyler Pastornicky, Eric Duncan doubled to the right field corner against Jeff Dietz (2-3), allowing Gomez to score. The next hitter, Mauro Gomez, lifted a Dietz breaking ball over the fence in left to put the Braves up by three.
Kyle Cofield started for Mississippi and made it through four innings, his longest outing since returning to the M-Braves on July 4. He was replaced in the fifth by Richard Sullivan (4-9), who surrendered three hits in three innings but managed to keep the BayBears off the scoreboard.
Yeliar Castro made his Double-A debut for the M-Braves in the eighth and ran into the only BayBear threat of the night. It was caused by his own control issues as he walked Collin Cowgill and Bryan Byrne to put two men on with one out. Taylor Harbin flied out to right which allowed Konrad Schmidt to advance to third base, the only BayBear to do so the entire night. Sean Coughlin ended the potential rally with a long flyout to Michael Daniel in right field.
Juan Abreu tossed a perfect ninth inning for the Braves after they added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth with three straight singles against Roque Mercedes. Mauro Gomez scored on a knock by Donell Linares with one out.
The BayBears will battle the Braves at Trustmark Park on Thursday night at 7:05 in game four of their five-game set with a return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, August 7, against the Jacksonville Suns at 7:05 p.m. The BayBears have also announced that Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be coming to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 for a special, two-day appearance in Mobile.
