Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

With Michael Bowden sent up to Boston, Mark Holliman got the start Monday night at McCoy Stadium in his first appearance for the PawSox and just a few weeks out of independent league ball. Holliman impressed, but the PawSox ultimately fell to Toledo, 4-1.

The Red Sox signed Holliman, 26, from Winnipeg of the Northern League in late June. He gave up just two runs in 14.2 innings over three games (two starts) for Single-A Salem, and got the call to Triple-A earlier on Monday. He allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out ten in six innings.

Mud Hens starter Alfred Figaro, however, did Holliman one better. He gave up one run on five hits, striking out ten in 6.2 innings to get the win and improve to 8-6.

The PawSox drew first blood in the third as Juan Apodaca doubled to lead things off. After Bubba Bell popper out and Jeremy Hermida struck out, Jed Lowrie doubled to deep center to make it 1-0. Lowrie, in Pawtucket on a rehab assignment, finished 1-3, while Hermida, also in Triple-A recovering from injury, went 0-4 with three strikeouts.

The Mud Hens came back in the fifth, aided by a piece of luck. Ben Guez's chopper to third took a bad hop and evaded Tug Hulett, allowing him to reach leading off. Wilkin Ramirez followed with another single, and Robinson Diaz hit a fly ball to right that was just deep enough to score Guez with the tying run. Max Leon promptly doubled to plate Ramirez and make it 2-1.

In the seventh, Randor Bierd came on in relief of Holliman and got two quick outs, but then allowed singles to Diaz, Leon, Scott Sizemore, and Will Rhymes as the deficit grew to 4-1.

After Figaro set down 12 in a row starting in the third, the PawSox finally drove him from the game when Josh Reddick doubled with two outs in the seventh. Reliever Fu-Te Ni walked Hulett and then allowed a double steal, but Apodaca struck out looking to end the inning.

The PawSox threatened with two outs again in the eighth, as Gil Velazquez (on for Lowrie in the seventh) doubled, Aaron Bates was hit by a pitch, and Lars Anderson singled off the glove of reliever Brendan Wise. Niuman Romero could do no better than a grounder to second, though, and Toledo escaped again.

Mud Hens pitchers finished with 13 strikeouts total, while the PawSox fanned eleven.
