Norfolk, VA- The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were defeated 4-0 by the Norfolk Tides on Monday night. Chiefs starter Jeff Mandel threw 7 2/3 innings but took the loss giving up two home runs to the Tides. Boomer Whiting was the only Chief to have a multi-hit game.

Syracuse (53-43) had its first scoring opportunity in the first inning. Seth Bynum drew a one out walk, stole second base, then stole third base, but a strikeout by Chase Lambin and a groundout by Jason Botts retired the side.

Norfolk (43-51) broke the scoreless tie in the third with a sacrifice fly from shortstop Robert Andino. Matt Angle had walked with one out and advanced to third on a two base error by Mandel. A pickoff attempt gone awry allowed Angle to scamper into third base and score on the lineout by Andino and make it 1-0 Norfolk after three.

The Tides struck again in the sixth on a solo home run from Michael Aubrey, his tenth of the season. The score was 2-0 after the sixth. The Chiefs went down in order the seventh, one of three innings they would send only three batters to the plate.

In the top of the eighth, Syracuse faced what would be its best scoring opportunity of the night in the late innings. Whiting had walked in the leadoff spot, and Bynum walked to put runners on first and second with none out. Lambin immediately followed with a hard liner into the glove of Reimold at first and he then stepped on the bag to complete a double play. Botts then grounded out to end the top half of the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Mandel issued a walk to Jeff Salazar, and then surrendered a two-run home run to Nolan Reimold. It was his seventh of the season and extended the Norfolk lead to 4-0.

Syracuse right fielder Kevin Mench walked to start the ninth, but Leonard Davis grounded into a double play and Pete Orr grounded out to end the ballgame.

Chris George pitched six innings in relief of starter Mike Gonzalez (1 IP) for his fifth win of the season. Jeff Mandel dropped to 4-5 with the loss.

The Chiefs and Tides will play the second of their four game series on Tuesday night at Harbor Park. Luis Atilano (2-1, 4.73) and Tim Bascom are the scheduled starters for Syracuse and Norfolk. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15.
