Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - A five-run fourth inning was too much to overcome as the Bulls fell to Columbus, 8-3 on Monday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Jeremy Hellickson lasted just 3.1 innings and tied a season-high with five walks as the Bulls fall to 56-39 on the season.
Each team put a run on the board in the second inning courtesy of solo home runs. Nick Weglarz took Hellickson deep to lead off the top of the inning, and Dioner Navarro answered back with a solo blast of his own off Clippers starter Yohan Pino in the bottom half of the frame.
The Bulls took the lead in the third inning, as Desmond Jennings singled with one out to start the rally. One batter later, Justin Ruggiano hit a towering home run over the Blue Monster in left field to put the Bulls on top 3-1. It was the 11th home run of the season for Ruggiano, and his 42 RBI on the season is the third best mark on the team.
The Clippers pulled away in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of Hellickson's inability to command his fastball in his first start since July 5. The right-hander walked the bases loaded to start the inning, and Eziquiel Carrera reached on a fielding error by first baseman Chris Richard to bring a run across. Jose Constanza brought the tying run across with a sacrifice fly, and Josh Rodriguez singled to load the bases with one out. Bulls skipper Charlie Montoyo went to his bullpen for right-hander Dale Thayer, who gave up a bases clearing double to Jordan Brown which broke the tie and gave Columbus a 6-3 advantage.
They would tack on two more in the sixth inning off Durham lefty Darin Downs. An RBI double by Nick Weglarz brought home Jared Goedert, and Lou Marson drove home a run with an RBI single to increase the Clippers lead to five.
Hellickson took the loss, and drops to 11-3 on the season. The 12 walks by Bulls pitchers is a season-high, after having walked nine on three different occasions earlier this season. Pino earned the win for the Clippers, tossing 6.0 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits. Carlton Smith and Zach Putnum combined to work a scoreless final three innings, as the Clippers improve on their league-best record of 58-38.
The two teams clash again tomorrow, as RHP Richard De Los Santos (7-5 4.34) takes the mound against RHP Carlos Carrasco (8-4 4.10). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
