
Johnny Hellweg holds off Chiefs for 6-5 win

Cedar Rapids, IA - Johnny Hellweg held off a Peoria Chief rally in the top of the 9th inning to earn his 10th save and give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 6-5 win to kick off a nine-game home stand in front of 4,204 fans on Armed Forces Night at Perfect Game Field.
The Kernels trailed 1-0 heading into the third inning, but Jean Segura tied the game with a solo HR to left center in the third inning, his fourth homer of the year. Jeremy Cruz capped a three run Kernel sixth inning with a two run homer way over the left field wall, his fifth home run of the year and second in as many games, to give the Kernels a 5-2 lead.
Kernels starter Tyler Skaggs (7-4) picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. Tyler Kehrer worked three innings of relief, giving up two runs on three hits with a strikeout. Peoria starter Ryan Searle (4-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over 5 IP.
Justin Bass was the only Kernel with more than one hit in the game, going 2-3 with an RBI and run scored. Casey Haerther went 1-4 with a double and Matt Long was 1-4 with a triple and RBI. Matt Cerda went 3-5 for the Chiefs with two doubles and an RBI and Mario Mercedes was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
The Kernels and Chiefs square off on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm on Best Western Longbranch T-Shirt Day. The first 1,000 fans (500 adults and 500 kids) receive a free Kernels T-shirt from the Best Western Longbranch. The Kernels will wear special red Angels' jerseys, sponsored by Xquisite Limo and you can play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo for a chance to win a trip to an Angels' game in Anaheim in 2011.
It's also 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day featuring Papa Balloon and Belle from Beauty and the Beast, autographs from the Kernels before the game, and running the bases and playing catch in the outfield after the game, thanks to Beef O'Brady's. And it's a make-up date for Bark in the Park, rescheduled from Sunday, June 12. Gates open at 1:00 pm
Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 11 am on Sunday. The current home stand continues through Monday, July 19th.
