TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Erie SeaWolves will meet in game two of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels walked off with a win for the second time this season as Brandon Crawford doubled home Darren Ford with the game-winning run in a 2-1, 12-inning win over the SeaWolves in the series opener on Thursday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Craig Westcott gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Making his Double-A debut...Began season with Advanced-A San Jose...Went 6-0 with a 1.83 ERA in 13 starts...Struck out 53 batters and walked 32...Ranked second in the California League in ERA and was fourth in batting average against (.242)...Began the season tossing 18 consecutive scoreless innings spanning four starts (4/9-4/29)...Club was 12-1 in his 13 starts...Was named an California League Mid-Season All-Star...Was the starting pitcher and struck out the side...Made seven starts with Short Season-A Salem-Kaiser in 2009..Went 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA...Struck out 42 batters and walked nine in 30 1/3 innings of work...Won NWL championship...Made pro debut with Rookie AZL Giants in 2009...Appeared in seven games, all in relief...Allowed four hits and struck out 21 batters while walking three in 13 innings of work...Is 13-0 with a 2.09 ERA in 27 games, 20 starts, as a pro...Team is 18-2 in his 20 career starts...Selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 30th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Belhaven College in Jackson, MS...Was named the 2009 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy as Mississippi's top collegiate baseball player as voted on by Major League scouts, coaches, and media members...Selected 2009 GCAC Pitcher of the Year and was named the GCAC All-Conference Team...Also named a NAIA Second Team All American in 2009.
Right-hander Thad Weber gets the nod in game two of the series for the SeaWovles...Received a no-decision in his last start against Richmond 6/27...Allowed three runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings...Struck out five batters and walked none...Eleven hits allowed were the second-most give up this season and was the fourth time in 15 starts he allowed double-digits in hits...Suffered the loss in his first appearance at Richmond 5/20 giving up four runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings while walking three batters and striking out two...Only start where he walked more batters than he struck out...Has gone at least five innings in all 15 of his starts this season...Tied with Daryl Maday for second in the Eastern League with 96 1/3 innings pitched...Has allowed 110 hits (tied for most in the Eastern League) in 96 1/3 innings...Went 7-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 13 starts with Erie in 2009 including throwing a nine-inning no-hitter against Akron on 8/22/09, striking out 10 batters...Only two base runners to reach against him came on a hit batter and an error...Began 2009 with Advanced-A Lakeland and went 4-4 with a 2.13 ERA in 12 starts...Named a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star...Selected in the 16th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Nebraska.
FRIENDLY COMPETITION: Three pairs of players for Erie and Richmond were former college teammates and were also drafted in the same year...Erie infielder Bryan Pounds was a college teammate of Richmond infielder Ryan Lormand at the University of Houston...Lormand was selected in the 26th round of the 2008 draft while Pounds was picked up in the 34th round...Infielders Alden Carrithers and Brandon Crawford were both teammates at UCLA...Carrithers was selected in the 15th round of the 2008 draft while Crawford went in the 4th round that same year...Also, outfielder Andy Dirks and third baseman Conor Gillaspie were teammates at Wichita State University...Dirks was selected in the 8th round in 2008 while Gillaspie was selected in the Supplemental 1st round, #37 overall, in 2008.
DEJA VU: Shortstop Brandon Crawford recorded his second inside-the-park home run this season in last night's 2-1 win over Erie...His other inside-the-park homer came 5/20 and was also against the SeaWolves...The three-run, inside-the-park homer off of reliever Zach Simons in the bottom of the eighth inning helped lift the Flying Squirrels to a 5-1 win...It was the third inside-the-park home run of the season for Richmond including Nick Noonan's inside-the-park home run 5/3 against Altoona.
EVEN STEVENS: Left-hander Jake Stevens tossed a season-long 4 1/3 innings and retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced to earn his fourth win...The 25-year-old has worked 8 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last seven outings...He has allowed just two hits over that span while striking out seven batters and walking two...Left-hand hitters are batting 4-for-48 (.083) with 16 strikeouts.
MAKING IT RAIN: Third baseman Conor Gillaspie has hits in a season-long six straight games...The 22-year-old is hitting .385 (10-for-26) over his last six games including four multi-hit games...He has a double, four RBI, and two runs scored over that stretch.
THUNDERSTRUCK Outfielder Roger Kieschnick has hits in each of his last five games...The 23-year-old is 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored over that stretch and has multi-hit games in three of the five contests...His longest hit streak of the season is six games (4/27-5/2).
HITTER BY DESIGNATION: The Flying Squirrels are hitting .258 (334-for-1297) with the designated hitter in the line up...The club is batting .239 (328-for-1374) with the pitcher batting...Richmond DHs are batting .194 (28-for-144) on the season; however, the DHs are just 8-for-88 over the last 22 games against American League affiliates (since 5/18)...The Flying Squirrel DHs were hitting .357 (20-for-56) over their first 16 games...Richmond pitchers are hitting just .130 (12-for-92) at the plate with 52 strikeouts...The Flying Squirrels are 23-16 against American League affiliates and will face an AL affiliate over the next three games counting today.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 108 double plays in 80 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Flying Squirrels improved to 3-3 in extra innings with last night's win...Two of the club's three wins in extra frames have come against Erie (6/26 & 7/1)...Last night's game matched the second-longest contest in terms of innings this season...Richmond also played 12 innings 6/19 against Altoona and lost 3-2...The longest game of the season for the club was 14 innings in a 1-0 loss at Altoona 4/13.
