BOWLING GREEN, Kent. - Alex Koronis struck out Ryan Goins with the potential tying runs at the corners, sending the Bowling Green Hot Rods (3-1; 34-39) to a 5-3 win over the visiting Lansing Lugnuts (3-1; 39-34) on Monday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Bowling Green starter Jason McEachern (3-6) fired 6 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory, though it did not come easily.

In the eighth inning, Scott Shuman allowed a Goins RBI single and then threw a run-scoring wild pitch to trim a 3-0 Hot Rods lead to one run.

After Bennett Davis's two-run single reinstated the three-run lead in the bottom of the eighth, Lansing threatened against Koronis in the ninth.

Kenny Wilson's two-out fielder's choice scored Kevin Nolan with the Lugnuts' third run, and Justin Jackson followed with a single to send Wilson racing to third. But Koronis whiffed Goins swinging with a blazing fastball, notching his second save.

Lansing starter Matt Fields (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on 11 hits in five innings.

Bowling Green pounded out 14 hits overall, with at least one base hit by each member of the starting lineup.

Nuts left-hander Egan Smith (1-0, 3.00) starts the middle affair of the series at 8:05 on Tuesday night against Hot Rods right-hander Kirby Yates (1-2, 1.93).

The Lansing Lugnuts' next home game is on Sunday, July 4th, at Cooley Law School Stadium, a special 7:05 p.m. start time with LAFCU Fireworks following the game.
