Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(New Britain, CT) - Kyle Gibson (4-3) hurled six scoreless innings on four hits, and Tony Davis notched his first Double-A save by retiring all six batters faced, as the New Britain Rock Cats (20-53) defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 2-1 on Friday night at New Britain Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 7,491.

Gibson, who earned his second win of the season against the Sea Dogs, issued one walk and fanned five. The Sea Dogs had only one baserunner reach base third base against the righty. Kyle Weiland (3-5) suffered the loss for Portland, yielding two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings, and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts. Eammon Portice relieved Weiland, and worked 1.1 scoreless on two hits and two strikeouts.

New Britain scored the first run of the series on Ben Revere's two-out, run-scoring single off Weiland in the third inning. The rally started on a one-out single by Yancarlos Ortiz, who advanced to second base on a ground out by Danny Lehmann.

The Rock Cats used small ball in the sixth inning to score their second run off Weiland. Ortiz led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice-bunt by Danny Lehmann. After Ben Revere singled, Chris Cates picked up the Game-Winning RBI with a safety-squeeze.

Portland's first run of the series was courtesy of Che-Hsuan Lin's 2-out RBI double, scoring Chih-Hsien Chiang, who led off the seventh inning with a two-bagger. The Sea Dogs loaded the bases in the inning but Luis Exposito grounded out to third base on a 3-2 count, which ended the inning.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats play game two of their series on Saturday night beginning at 6:35. Portland will have top pitching prospect Casey Kelly (1-3, 4.85) on the hill against New Britain's Deolis Guerra (1-3, 2.88).
