Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - Thursday night's game at Waterfront Park was a back-and-forth tilt. The Sea Dogs took a 4-0 lead early, only to see the Thunder answer, tying the game at five, before eventually taking a 7-5 lead. However, with one out in the ninth, Luis Exposito put Portland ahead for good, blasting a three-run homer to left-center field. Yamaico Navarro added another long ball, as the Sea Dogs came back to beat Trenton, 10-7.

After a scoreless first inning, both teams' offenses came to life in the second. Portland's half of the inning began with a walk to Anthony Rizzo and a double by Yamaico Navarro. A wild pitch scored Rizzo, before Chih-Hsien Chiang launched a two-run homer to right field. Two batters later, Matt Sheely kept the rally alive with a single, and scored when Ryan Khoury doubled down the left field line. The Thunder responded with three runs in their half of the second, thanks to a solo home run by Brandon Laird, as well as a two-run shot by Daniel Brewer.

The scoring continued in the third, as the two clubs exchanged runs. Anthony Rizzo got the Sea Dogs' run on a home run to right field. Trenton's run came with two outs, as Brandon Laird and Jorge Vazquez picked up back-to-back doubles.

Trenton ultimately tied the game in the fourth on three consecutive singles. Kevin Mahoney's hit produced the run, knocking in Marcos Vechionacci.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when the Thunder took their first lead of the night. With one out, Austin Krum started the rally with a double. After a flyout by Austin Romine and a walk to Brandon Laird, Jorge Vazquez recorded his second RBI of the night, doubling to left.

The Thunder added one more run in the eighth on an RBI single by Justin Christian, but the insurance run and the lead disappeared in the ninth. Ryan Khoury led off with a single, and moved to second on Che-Hsuan Lin's walk. Ray Chang advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Luis Exposito. The Portland designated hitter stepped up, and drove a 2-2 pitch out of the park, giving the Sea Dogs an 8-7 lead.

Those three runs were charged to losing pitcher Kevin Whelan (0-1). However, the Sea Dogs weren't done yet. Wilkins Arias walked Anthony Rizzo on four pitches, then served up a two-run blast to Yamaico Navarro, as Portland put five on the board in the ninth.

Jason Rice (1-1) struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth, then sent three more hitters down on strikes in the ninth, preserving his first win in Double-A.

The Sea Dogs will begin a new series on Friday night, as they return home to take on the Reading Phillies. At 6:00, Portland and Reading will finish their suspended game from May 27th, with the Sea Dogs leading 6-4 in the top of the sixth. Once that game finishes, the two clubs will play the nine-inning game that was originally scheduled for that date.
