Smith Of The Aeros Is Put On Disabled List

The Aeros made a roster move today as RHP Carlton Smith was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 31st with a left oblique strain and LHP Scott Barnes was received from Class-A Mahoning Valley.

Smith was excellent in relief for the Aeros thus far this season, holding a 0-1 record with two saves and a 0.96 ERA. He has held opponents to a .161 batting average in his 9.1 innings pitched so far. He began the season with the Class AAA Columbus Clippers where he had a 6.92 ERA in 10 appearances. Smith was an Eastern League All-Star for the Aeros last season and was originally selected in the 21st round of the June 2004 Draft by the Indians.

Barnes returns today and was the the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 23rd. He made nine starts for the Aeros this season and registered two of the three no-hit starts for Akron on the season. Overall, he is 1-5 with a 7.45 ERA and still ranks second on the team with 39 strikeouts in 38.2 IP. The Indians acquired Barnes from the San Francisco Giants organization last July in a trade with Ryan Garko.

An updated roster and transactions list are attached. Barnes will be wearing his usual #26 tonight and starting in the finale of a three-game home stand against the Erie SeaWolves.
