Drive's Late Rally Comes Up Just Short Versus Power
May 1, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive (14-9) did everything they could for another miraculous come-from-behind victory, but in the end they came up just short Saturday night versus the Power (10-12) by a 6-5 score.
It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth that Greenville got on the scoreboard, and by then they were already down 5-0. The Drive cut their deficit to three runs in the inning when Derrik Gibson hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to leftfield.
After another run by West Virginia in the top of the 9th, the Drive attempted their rally. With the first two batters of the inning popping out, Greenville rattled off four consecutive hits, highlighted by an RBI-single by Mike Thomas, an RBI-triple by Kenneth Roque, and an RBI-double by Wilfred Pichardo.
Gibson then stepped to plate, needing just a hit to the outfield to score the team's speediest runner from second. However, another thrilling walk-off win by the Drive wasn't in the cards as Ryan Kelly recorded a strikeout to end a heroic effort.
The Drive dug themselves an early hole, as Manuel Rivera (2-1) surrendered single runs in the first and second innings. Jesus Brito bashed a two-out homer, while Jose Hernandez added a run-scoring groundout an inning later.
West Virginia extended their lead in the sixth, tagging Anatanaer Batista for two runs - one earned - in his only inning of work.
The Drive and Power conclude their four-game series tomorrow at Fluor Field with first pitch set for 4:05 PM. Greenville will look to win another series when they send right-hander Roman Mendez (0-1, 12.10 ERA). West Virginia looks for a series split with right-hander Kyle McPherson (1-2, 4. 87 ERA).
Sunday is also "Family FunDay" at the ballpark, where kids 12 and under get to run the bases at the conclusion of the game. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
