Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - West Virginia scored four times in an error-riddled eighth inning and held off another late Charleston rally, as the Power downed the RiverDogs, 6-5, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 2,131 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, West Virginia improves to 2-3, while Charleston drops to 2-3.
Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth, Jarek Cunningham doubled to lead off against RiverDogs reliever Ryan Acosta (0-1). After an Evan Chambers walk, Aaron Baker laid down a sacrifice bunt which was errantly tossed into the right field bullpen, then again from there into short left field allowing both Cunningham and Chambers to score for a 6-6 tie. Kyle Morgan brought home Baker with a RBI double for a 7-6 lead, and Jesus Brito reached on a fielder's choice, took third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a two-bagger by Rogelio Noris increasing the lead to 8-6.
Charleston committed five errors in the contest and now has 13 errors through five games this season.
The RiverDogs pushed one run across in the ninth against Marc Baca via Rob Lyerly's RBI double to left-centerfield cutting the deficit to 6-5. Baca, though, would record his first save of the year by fanning Taylor Grote to end the game.
The Power took a 1-0 in the third, when shortstop Adenson Chourio's sacrifice fly to left allowed Brito to score from third. Brito singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error by RiverDogs' second baseman Jimmy Paredes.
West Virginia increased its lead to 2-0 in the fifth off Charleston starter Kelvin Perez on a two-out RBI single by Ramon Cabrera. Perez took the no decision in 6.2 innings of work, surrendering two runs - one earned - on six base hits with four strikeouts.
Charleston tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half on a RBI double by Ray Kruml and a RBI single by Kyle Higashioka against reliever Maurice Bankston.
Another run scored in the sixth for a 3-2 lead when Chourio's throw on Kelvin Castro's groundball pulled Baker off the first base bag allowing Lyerly to score the go-ahead run. Paredes clocked a solo home run in the seventh against righty Zach Foster for a 4-2 lead. Although Foster (1-0) gave up the circuit clout, he still picked up the win due to the Power's four-run eighth inning rally.
West Virginia starter Phillip Irwin lasted just 4.0 innings allowing two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Paredes paced Charleston with three hits including the home run, while Lyerly and Grote added two hits each for the second straight game. West Virginia's Morgan went 3-for-4 with a RBI double and received two hits from Cunningham.
Game 2 of this four-game series is set for 7:05 pm Tuesday, with Charleston sending southpaw Shaeffer Hall (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound to take on West Virginia right-hander Hunter Strickland (0-1, 9.00 ERA).
