Curve Comeback Falls Short in Loss

July 31, 2009 - Eastern League (EL) Altoona Curve

ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve lost for the fourth consecutive time to the Trenton Thunder (AA-New York Yankees) this year 5-2 in the series opener Friday night at Blair County Ballpark.

The Curve have now fallen to the Thunder six consecutive times dating back to 7/30/08. The Thunder scored four early runs off of starter Phil Dumatrait (0-1) who was making a rehab start for the Pirates. Dumatrait allowed five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work for the loss.

Trailing 5-0 the Curve attempted to rally in the ninth inning with four consecutive two-out singles ending with an RBI one bagger by Jason Delaney who extended his team lead in RBIs with 45. Miles Durham would score the final run for the Curve on a wild pitch before Jeff Corsaletti grounded out to end the game. Durham extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the ninth inning.

Pirates No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez continued his hot hitting in the month of July with a 3-for-4 night raising his batting average to .302 overall and to .352 (32x91) this month hitting four home runs with 15 RBIs.

The Curve (42-65) and Thunder (52-53) meet for the middle game of their three game series Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with radio coverage starting at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network.

Saturday will feature two debut starts as Tim Alderson (6-1, 3.47) makes his first start as a member of the Altoona Curve after being acquired in the Pirates and Giants deal for Freddy Sanchez. RHP Lance Pendleton makes his first career Double-A start for Trenton after being called up from Tampa (A-Advanced) Friday.
