Peoria Chiefs News Release

Dayton, OH -The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past the Dayton Dragons 4-3 Tuesday night to start a 10-game road trip. The Chiefs have won six straight to move over .500 for the first time in the second half at 16-15 and they are now 54-46 overall on the season.

Down 3-2 entering the ninth, Jovan Rosa started things off with a single to center. With one out Junior Lake was safe at first on a fielding error by third baseman Carlos Mendez as pinch-runner Drew Rundle advanced to second. Nelson Perez singled to left and Rundle slid home safely under the tag to tie the game 3-3 as both runners moved up on the throw home. With the infield in, David Macias put the ball in play on the right side and Lake scored without a throw as the second baseman had only one play at first base. Up 4-3 the Chiefs called on closer Chris Huseby to close the door in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs Huseby walked Miguel Rojas but Michael Brenly threw Rojas out at second on a pitch in the dirt to end the game and preserve the 4-3 win.

The Chiefs started the roadtrip in style against Dragons starter Mark Serrano. With one out in the top of the first Ryan Flaherty reached on a single and scored on Rebel Ridling's first career triple. After a strikeout, newcomer D.J. LeMahieu singled up the middle to plate Ridling and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

Chiefs' starter Justin Bristow kept his squad on top 2-0 through three innings by allowing just one runner past first base. But the Dragons struck back to tie the game in the fourth. Carlos Mendez reached on an error by Rosa at third base to start the frame. Byron Wiley made sure the home team capitalized on the miscue with a rocket two-run homer into the right-field berm. The homer was Wiley's 11th of the season and tied the game 2-2.

Another error by Rosa allowed the Dragons to take the lead in the sixth against Chiefs reliever Manolin DeLeon. Wiley singled with one out and Cody Puckett laid down a bunt. Rosa threw wild to first and Wiley came all the way around to score for a 3-2 lead. DeLeon retired the next two batters to pitch out of the jam and set the stage for a ninth-inning comeback.

Bristow took a no-decision after allowing just one earned run on five hits over five innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out four. DeLeon allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out three in his two innings. Ryan Buchter (3-0) picked up the win after striking out all three batters he faced. Huseby now has 13 saves after throwing a scoreless ninth with one walk and one strikeout.
