
Kane County Defeats Dragons 18-3 on Sunday

Dayton, Ohio-Jeremy Barfield collected four hits including his first home run of the season as the Kane County Cougars pounded the Dayton Dragons 18-3 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 7,919 at Fifth Third Field.
The Cougars won two of three in the series and improved their record to 19-11 on the season. Dayton fell to 8-22 with the loss.
Kane County collected 20 hits in the game, building a 10-0 lead by the middle of the fifth inning. The Cougars tied a Dragons club record for most doubles by an opponent with eight in the game.
Kane County led 2-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth against Dragons starter Oscar Castro (1-2) and then tacked on three more in the fifth against reliever Leonardo Astorga.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dayton followed three singles by Tyler Stovall, Frank Pfister, and Dave Sappelt with a bases loaded walk to Cody Puckett to force in a run and get on the scoreboard. In the sixth, Byron Wiley led off with his first home run of the season and Kevin Coddington scored later in the inning on Pfister's infield ground out to make it 10-3.
But Kane County added six more runs in the seventh inning to take a 16-3 lead and then scored two more in eighth to close out the scoring.
Castro suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) in three-plus innings of work. He gave up five hits and three walks with one strikeout. Astorga worked three innings in relief, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Mark James closed out the game on mound for the Dragons, working the final three innings, allowing six hits and four runs with two walks and one strikeout.
Dayton finished with six hits. Pfister went 2 for 4 with a double and a run batted in.
Kane County's Grant Desme connected on a two-run home run to contribute to their 20-hit attack. Dusty Napoleon and Carlos Arrieche each had two doubles and a single.
The Dragons are off on Monday. They host the West Michigan Whitecaps in the start of a four-game series on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. J.C. Sulbaran (0-0, 6.00) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Matt Hoffman (4-0, 0.84).
