Perez and Fish power Kernels to 4-2 win over River Bandits

August 5, 2008 - Julio Perez was 3 for 4 with a stolen base and drove in a key insurance run and Robert Fish scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Fish (8-4) walked just two and struck out six for the win and Eddie McKiernan worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his 16th save of the season.

River Bandit starter Ryan Kulik (3-4) held the Kernels in check until the fourth inning when they scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Moore. They added two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Andrew Romine and Alex Silversmith and then added a big insurance run on an RBI single by Julio Perez in the eighth. Kulick allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out nine over six innings in taking the loss.

The Kernels had 11 hits in the game as Hector Estrella was 2 for 3 with a double and run scored, Jay Brossman was 1 for 4 with a double and run scored and Romine was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Quad Cities scored their two runs in the eighth on RBI doubles by Brett Wallace and Aaron Luna off Kernels reliever Naldy Calderon. Wallace had 3 of Quad Cities six hits and has hit safely in 24 of his 27 professional games.

The Kernels and River Bandits play game two of this four game series on Wednesday night at 7 pm. It's the final Z 102.9 Wii Wednesday and one of the lucky fans who played Wii games on the Rockwell Collins GameLink will win a Nintendo Wii system from Z 102.9 and Best Buy. Regular hot dogs are $1 during the game and the first 250 fans through the gates when they open at 6 pm receive a free sample bag of Popcorn Indiana popcorn.

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Wednesday. The current home stand continues through Friday, August 8th.
