Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits never found their offensive rhythm on Tuesday afternoon, falling by a 4-2 scored to Robert Fish and the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Quad Cities (24-20, 57-51) got a 3-for-4 effort from reigning Midwest League Player of the Week Brett Wallace, and starter Ryan Kulik struck out nine over six solid innings. Robert Fish turned in an even better starting performance for Cedar Rapids (23-20), however, while Julio Perez added a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
Fish (8-4) controlled the game throughout his outing, firing off seven shutout innings and allowing just three hits - all singles. Two of those hits came off the bat of Wallace, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, and all five baserunners against Fish reached after two outs had already been recorded in the inning. The left-hander struck out six and walked two, improving to 3-0 in four starts against the River Bandits this season.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Perez manufactured the first run of the game. The Kernels' team leader in home runs and RBI showed off his wheels by singling to left, breaking for second to induce a balk, and stealing third - all with one out. Jeremy Moore made it pay off with a fly ball to right, scoring Perez on the sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Cedar Rapids lead.
The Kernels added to the advantage in the fifth. Hector Estrella led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on a throwing error by the right fielder. That put him in position to score on Alex Silversmith's single, while Silversmith took second on the throw to the plate. Later in the frame, Andrew Romine's base hit to left plated Silversmith for a 3-0 lead.
The River Bandits got back into the game with a pair of runs against Kernels reliever Naldi Calderon in the top of the eighth. There was a man on first and two away when Wallace and Aaron Luna smacked back-to-back run-scoring doubles, pulling Quad Cities to within a 3-2 score.
But that was as close as they would get.
Cedar Rapids added a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Jay Brossman doubled and came around on Perez' third hit of the game for a 4-2 lead. Eddie McKiernan (16) finished things off in the ninth, working around a leadoff single with a double play to close the door on another save.
Kulik (3-4) suffered the loss for Quad Cities despite a solid outing. He tied a team-high with nine strikeouts and did not issue a walk, allowing three runs - two earned - on eight hits over six innings of work.
