Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - The South Bend Silver Hawks blanked the Lansing Lugnuts for the third consecutive time at Coveleski Stadium, this time by a count of 3-0. The loss also snapped the Lugnuts three-game winning streak.
The Lugnuts fell behind in the second inning when Bill Musselman and Matt Oxendine clocked back-to-back doubles off of Lansing starter Chi-Hung Cheng, putting the Hawks up 1-0.
It turned out to be all of the offense that the Silver Hawks would need, as three hurlers combined to shutout Lansing.
Tom Layne (5-3) earned the win after tossing six innings. He allowed just three hits while striking out three batters. Only three runners reached scoring position against him.
Jeff Dietz and Clay Zavada threw the final three innings, with Zavada picking up his fourth save of the year.
Lansing has not scored a run in South Bend in their last 25 innings, a streak that dates back to July 3rd.
South Bend added two more runs in the seventh by lacing three consecutive doubles off of Lansing reliever Edgar Estanga. Collin Cowgill, Taylor Harbin, and Sean Coughlin each smacked two-baggers, with Harbin's and Coughlin's hits driving in runs, making it a 3-0 game.
Cheng (5-6) took the loss despite pitching well. He gave up just one run over five innings, while allowing a lone run on eight hits.
Lansing (63-51, 24-20) and South Bend (61-52, 28-16) will continue the series Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
