Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs fell to the first-place Burlington Bees by a score of 7-4 Tuesday night at O'Brien Field, despite a rehab start by Cubs right-hander Jon Lieber. The loss puts the Chiefs at 23-21 in the second half and 53-59 on the season. The Chiefs came out swinging, scoring two runs in the first inning. Josh Harrison led off the inning with a single off Bees starter Ray Liotta and was quickly followed by another base hit off the bat of Jake Opitz. Nate Samson loaded the bases with a bunt single, and Jovan Rosa scored the Chiefs first run with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0 Chiefs. Luis Bautista drove in one more with a RBI ground out to the shortstop that brought Opitz home. Liotta struck out Rebel Ridling to get the Bees out of the inning with the Chiefs ahead 2-0. Peoria didn't keep the lead for long as the Bees came back with a three-run inning in the third against Lieber, making the first rehab appearance at O'Brien Field of the season. With one out, David Lough put a runner on for Burlington with a single to left field. Johnny Giavotella added a single of his own to right field, advancing Lough to third, but a wild throw by Harrison allowed Lough to score, cutting the Bees deficit to 2-1. Mike Moustakas gave Burlington the lead with a two-run homer over the wall in right-center off Lieber. The blast tied Moustakas for the Midwest League lead in home runs with 19 and gave the Bees a 3-2 lead. Another Moustakas home run extended the Bees lead in the fifth. With one out, Giavotella singled to left field, and Moustakas followed it up with a homer off Chiefs reliever Robert Hernandez, his league-leading 20th home run of the season. The two-run homer advanced the Bees lead to 5-2 over the Chiefs. The Bees added two more runs in the sixth off Hernandez. With one out, Jamar Walton singled to right and advanced to third on a double by Juan Rivera. Lough hit a two-run triple to right field before Giavotella struck out to end the inning with the Bees up 7-2. The Chiefs added one more run of their own in the sixth thanks to a home run from Rosa. Rosa's solo shot off Liotta was his sixth of the season but still left the Chiefs trailing 7-3. One more run in the ninth inning was not enough for the Chiefs as they finished 7-4 against the Bees. With two outs, Brandon Guyer doubled to left field off Bees reliever Zach Peterson and was driven home courtesy of a single from Jonathan Wyatt. Unfortunately, the run was not enough as Luis Flores ended the game with a fly out to left. Lieber threw three innings with the Chiefs, allowing three runs, all of which were earned, on five hits. He struck out three batters and allowed one home run, taking the loss. Hernandez came out of the bullpen for the second time in his career as a Chief to throw five innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out five, also allowing a home run. Jon Mueller threw one inning, allowing no hits or runs and striking out one.
