New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - David Winfree crushed a three-run home run in the first inning to put the Rock Cats ahead, but the lead vanished courtesy a Reading comeback as the R-Phils won, 4-3.
In the first inning, Winfree hit a towering shot just inside the left field foul pole to put the Rock Cats ahead, 3-0.
Anthony Swarzak looked sharp in the first two innings, including retiring the first three batters he faced. In the second, though, a throwing error by Toby Gardenhire allowed leadoff man Lou Marson to reach second base safely. Swarzak retired the next two batters, with Marson moving to third on a groundout. Marson then scored on a passed ball by Drew Butera to put Reading on the board, 3-1.
In the fourth, Greg Golson led off with a solo homer to left field for the R-Phils. Brad Harman tacked on an RBI single to score Marson, who had singled, to tie the game, 3-3. Mike Eylward's sacrifice fly that scored Neil Sellers put the R-Phils ahead, 4-3.
Carlos Carrasco settled down after allowing Winfree's homer in the first. Carrasco (6-7, 4.05) finished with three runs on three hits in six innings. He struck out seven. Justin Pope notched his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.
Swarzak (3-8, 5.67) surrendered four runs (3 ER) and seven hits in six innings. Zach Ward and Robert Delaney combined for three innings of shutout relief for the Rock Cats.
