Sea Dogs sweep doubleheader

New Britain, CT - New Britain Stadium was filled to capacity with a standing-room only crowd of 8,115, -- the highest single-game attendance ever - but the Portland Sea Dogs walked away with a doubleheader sweep.

In the first game of the double-dip, the Rock Cats watched an early lead vanish as the Portland Sea Dogs came back and defeated the ‘Cats, 8-6.

Dustin Martin led off the bottom of the first to give the Rock Cats an early 1-0 lead. Drew Butera copied the feat in the third inning for a 2-0 advantage. The Rock Cats tacked on two more runs in the inning with Erik Lis scoring with the bases loaded after Toby Gardenhire was hit by a pitch. Matt Moses then scored on a bases loaded walk by Rodolfo Palacios for a 4-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs struck for five run in the fifth - including RBI doubles by Bubba Bell and Jeff Corsaletti - to take the lead, 5-4. Portland added three more runs in the sixth. Tony Granadillo and Aaron Bates each had an RBI double. Corsaletti (3-for-3) added a sacrifice fly RBI that scored Bell.

The Rock Cats' comeback in the bottom of the seventh fell short after Gardenhire delivered a two-run single.

Chad Rhoades (3-3, 5.19) picked up the win in relief after firing a perfect fourth inning. Beau Vaughan notched his 13th save of the season. Zach Ward (2-6, 3.76) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (4 ER) on nine hits.

In the nightcap, Zachary Daeges hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning that gave the Sea Dogs a 2-1 victory and capped a doubleheader sweep.

Gardenhire put the Rock Cats ahead 1-0 with a solo home run to left field, his first professional career homer. Daeges answered back with a two-run shot in the top of the fourth that put the Sea Dogs ahead.

Dustin Richardson (6-5, 5.62) limited the Rock Cats to two hits through five innings. He struck out four. Richard Lentz added two scoreless innings in relief, striking out four.

Kyle Aselton suffered the loss for the Rock Cats despite tossing five solid innings. Aselton (4-3, 4.32) allowed two hits while striking out five.
