Jordan Walden, Eddie McKiernan and Ysmael Carmona combined to hold the Kane County Cougars to just three hits in a 2-0 shutout victory on Tuesday night at Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, IL. The game was delayed nearly two hours due to severe weather.
Walden (2-3) allowed a single hit and struck out six over six scoreless innings for the win. McKiernan struck out three over two innings of relief and Carmona walked one and struck out one in the ninth to notch his second save of the season.
The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Andrew Romine singled and stole second. Romine then stole third and scored on an errant throw by catcher Matt Smith. They added to the lead in the eighth as Ivan Contreras tripled and scored on a single by Jeremy Moore.
Romine finished the night 2 for 4 and his two stolen bases give him 17 for the season, which leads the Midwest League. Chris Rosenbaum was 1 for 3 with a double as the Kernels had eight hits.
Kane County starter Scott Mitchinson (3-1) took the loss.
