Dayton Dragons News Release

Lansing, Mich.-Matt Liuzza drilled a home run and drove in four runs as the Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-0 on Wednesday night. The win was the first of the series for Lansing after Dayton had posted one-run victories on Monday and Tuesday.

Despite the loss, the Dragons remained alone in first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division, one game ahead of West Michigan, which lost to Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

The Lugnuts scored one run in the second inning and three in the third against Dragons starting pitcher Matt Klinker (2-2) to open a 4-0 lead. Jamie Arneson replaced Klinker in the fifth and allowed three runs in the inning including Liuzza's two-run home run, his first of the year, to make it 7-0. Lansing tacked on another run against Arneson in the sixth to make it 8-0.

The Dragons collected just four hits in the game but had a chance early to get the lead. Trailing 1-0 in the third, they loaded the bases with no one out on consecutive singles by Devin Mesoraco, Justin Reed, and Kevyn Feiner, but Lansing starting pitcher Nate Starner struck out the next three, Zack Cozart, Denis Phipps, and Brandon Waring to keep the Dragons off the board. The Dragons did not have a base hit after the third inning.

Klinker allowed six hits and four earned runs over four innings to take the loss. He walked two and struck out five.

Arneson allowed four earned runs on five hits over one and one-third innings of work.

The Dragons meet the Lugnuts on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Luis Montano (5-1, 2.68) will start for Dayton.

The Dragons open a seven game homestand on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Great Lakes. The Dragons also host Great Lakes in a day-night doubleheader on Saturday with games at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. Both games are nine inning games. Tickets for Sunday's (May 11) postponed game will be honored at the noon game on Saturday. For more information, call (937) 228-2287.

Notes: The Dragons were shutout for just the second time this season in suffering their second most lopsided loss of the year...The loss was just the seventh in the last 20 games for the Dragons.
