Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Carolina League has announced that Pelicans' right-hander Tommy Hanson (2-0, 0.00) has been named as the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 14th - 20th. The 21-year old won both of his starts to improve to 2-0 during the week.
Hanson has been the most dominant pitcher in the Carolina League this season, presently having permitted no earned runs over four starts and 22 innings pitched. He has the most innings pitched in the league without allowing an earned run, and leads the league with 32 strikeouts. The native of Redlands, CA, has also allowed just five hits.
In his two starts during the past week, Hanson beat the Winston-Salem Warthogs at BB&T Coastal Field on Monday and the Kinston Indians at Historic Grainger Stadium on Saturday. Against the Warthogs, he turned in five innings, allowing one unearned run, while striking out six and walking one. He one-hit the K-Tribe on the road over six shutout innings, again striking out six, while walking two.
He put the league on notice in his first start of the season, fanning a career-high 13 Wilmington Blue Rocks in just five innings of no-hit ball. Just two batters were able to put the ball in play off of Hanson, both for outs. His 13 strikeouts were just one off the Pelicans' franchise record of 14, posted over six innings on June 12th, 2004 by Kyle Davies.
Originally drafted in the 22nd round of the 2005 MLB draft, Hanson posted an 11-inning scoreless streak to start the season, and is currently riding a 10-inning scoreless streak heading into his fifth start of the season on Thursday night against the Lynchburg Hillcats.
Individual game tickets for the entire slate of Pelicans home games along with the 2008 California-Carolina League All-Star Game are currently available by calling the Pelicans at (843) 918-6000 or toll-free (877) 918-TIXX, logging on to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com or visiting the Pelicans Box Office at BB&T Coastal Field.
