Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gwinnett Gladiators got a pair of goals from Brad Schell and 33 saves from Roswell, GA, native Dave Caruso to get past the South Carolina Stingrays 4-2 in the Gladiators season opener on Friday night. Jon Awe posted the first goal of the 2006-07 season for the Gladiators as he rifled a slapshot over the shoulder of South Carolina netminder Davis Parley 40 seconds into their first power play of the season. Brad Schell dropped the puck off for Awe at the point to set up the goal just 1:53 into the contest. Jeff Campbell also added an assist on the marker. South Carolina answered on the power play with just 2:17 left in the opening period. Cail MacLean collected the rebound in the left wing circle and ripped the puck past Gwinnett netminder Dave Caruso for the marker. Donny Grover and Evan Schwabe collected the helpers on the goal. Gwinnett never trailed as Mike Vigilante put the Gladiators back ahead for good with his first maker of the season sliding the puck past Parley at the 14:53 mark just inside the far post. Paul Flache and Schell hooked up to pick up the assists as they set up Vigilante on the tally. Schell gave the Gladiators a two-goal advantage with his first marker of the season at the 6:35 mark of the third period. Schell picked up a rebound in the right wing face off circle and ripped the puck into an empty net as Parley was caught on the opposite side of the crease. Colton Fretter and Jeff Campbell had the assists as they walked in on Parley on the initial rush into the Stingray's zone. Matt Reid answered for the Stingrays just a minute later as he collected a bouncing puck just inside his blue line and walked down the left wing wall, beating Caruso to the far post over his left shoulder for the goal. Reid's unassisted marker came shorthanded at the 7:36 mark of the third period. Schell added his second marker of the game as he punched home an empty net marker for the Gladiators to put the game away with just 21 seconds left in the third period. Paul Flache and Campbell collected the assists on the empty net power play goal. Caruso finished with 33 saves for the Gladiators in the win as Gwinnett went 2-for-14 on the man advantage, while the Stingrays were 1-for-14 on the power play in the loss.
