Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Mike Cather, Jeff Zimmerman and Jeff Sparks have company.

George Sherrill became the fourth former Goldeyes pitcher to get the call that every baseball player waits for when the Seattle Mariners promoted him today from their Pacific Coast (AAA) League affiliate in Tacoma.

He got the news during a luncheon at the Triple A All-Star Game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where he was to suit up for the PCL in tonight's contest vs. the International League.

Obtained with Scott Martin in 2002 from Sioux Falls in exchange for Billy Coleman, Sherrill was with Winnipeg for one-and-a-half seasons. He went 3-5 with two saves and a 3.07 earned run average in 2002 for the Goldeyes, striking out 61 and walking just 13 in 41 innings.

As good as he was that year, Sherrill was even better last year. Appearing in 16 games, he was 1-0 with one save and a 1.13 ERA, fanning 30 and walking only four in 16 innings before the Mariners purchased his contract on July 2.

Assigned to San Antonio of the Texas (AA) League, he went 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA in 16 games as the Missions steamrolled everyone en route to a league title.

Invited to spring training this year with the Mariners, Sherrill began the season with Tacoma. In a club-best 36 games, he was 4-2 with a 2.32 ERA. He also had 13 saves, good for second in the league, and had struck out 62 and walked just nine in 50-plus innings.

Sherrill will join the Mariners in Seattle tomorrow when the Mariners open a 12-game homestand against the Cleveland Indians.
